This is the most severe form of Spina Bifida and the form that most people think about when they hear the words Spina Bifida. This form presents itself as an opening on the lower or middle back exposing several vertebrae. This causes the membranes and the spinal cord to protrude at birth in a sac. This is very dangerous as the risk of infection is high.
Characteristics of this form are neurological defects, muscle weakness or paralysis of the legs, bowel or bladder problems, seizures, deformed feet, uneven hips or a curved spine and hydrocephalus which requires a shunt in the brain.
